Wine Review: Bernhard Ott “Am Berg” Grüner Veltliner

Getting the charming Gruner Veltliner just right

Gruner Veltliner is just one of those things that Austrians have quietly introduced to the world and made very little fuss over. And so we tend not to fuss too much over these wines but by no means should we be ignoring them. Rather a good bottle of Gruner can be a fun wine to open on the right occasion and with very little guilt or thought. You know you are always going to get something delicious and charming.

Bernhard Ott “Am Berg” Grüner Veltliner Review

When it comes to picking a Gruner Veltliner you should look for somebody who obsesses over the grape. Take Bernhard Ott for example who has made it his life mission to show that Gruner Veltliner can produce wines of elegance, longevity and great complexity. His obsession is expressed in the farm where everything is at least organic, through to hand harvesting and spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks in the cellar. It is a light hand, but it allows for more expressive wines that exude both charm and excellence.

The “Am Berg” Gruner Veltliner may be the simplest of wines from Mr. Ott, but it is no less elegant. In fact this wine is a great bottle to have on hand for any little occasion. Light and fresh, this charming glass of Gruner is remarkably approachable and fun. A hint of melon and pear on the nose and palate combine with fresh white pepper and nuts to make for a versatile wine that could easily pair with fish, salads or schnitzels.

Charming, fresh and fun!

The Am Berg Gruner Veltliner by Bernard Ott is a charming wine that is versatile for any occasion requiring something fresh and fun. Perfect for when you need an easy drinking wine that not only hits the spot, but elevates those little moments during the weeknights or weekends to make your memories just a bit more interesting.
